Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan to sign some joint documents

Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Oct. 22 By Demir Azizov– Trend: Uzbek President Islam Karimov will pay an official visit to Turkmenistan on October 23-24, 2014 at the invitation of Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the president’s press-service reported Oct. 22. "The issues of developing the bilateral relations, important regional and international issues are planned to be discussed as part of the regular Uzbek-Turkmen dialogue at the highest level," a statement said. A joint statement of the presidents and a number of documents will be signed following the visit. They are aimed at further intensifying the Uzbek-Turkmen cooperation in various areas. The documents to be signed during the visit were not specified. President Karimov paid his previous visit to Turkmenistan in October 2012. An agreement on economic cooperation between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan for 2013-2017 was signed during the visit. The legal base of bilateral cooperation, regulating the relations between the two countries in the multifaceted cooperation includes around 160 documents. The two countries are actively developing the relations in the cultural-humanitarian sphere. Around 170,000 Turkmens live in Uzbekistan. The trade turnover between the countries amounted to $353.9 million in 2013. Uzbekistan exported goods worth $170.3 million to Turkmenistan, but imported the goods worth $183.6 million. The trade turnover amounted to $145 million in January-June 2014, of which export hit $128.4 million, but import - $16.6 million, the Uzbek State Statistics Committee said. There are seven joint ventures with the Turkmen capital in Uzbekistan.
