Veto Vote Won't Affect Malaysia-Russia Ties, Says Russian Envoy

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 (Bernama) -- Russia is confident that the veto vote it cast against the Malaysia-proposed resolution for an international criminal tribunal on the downing of Flight MH17 will not affect relations between the two countries. Russian Ambassador to Malaysia Valery Yermolov said the veto would not stop Russia's support for Malaysia and other countries in seeking justice for the victims, instead it was meant to avoid the tragedy being politicised by certain parties. "Our wish and our vote in the United Nations Security Council were not against Malaysia (and its intention to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice). Russia, on July 29, used its veto right to block a five-nation proposal, initiated by Malaysia, to establish an ad hoc criminal international tribunal to try those responsible for the downing of MH17 last year. Yermolov said Russia would support any move taken by affected countries to prosecute those implicated in the tragedy after the results of investigations are available. All 298 passengers and crew on board Flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur perished when the aircraft was shot down over Donetsk in eastern Ukraine on July 17 last year. -- BERNAMA
