Vietnam leader says he expects younger generations to stay friends with Russia

HANOI, May 7. /TASS/. Vietnam and Russia have very much in common despite their territorial remoteness from each other, Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang said on Thursday. "I am sure that younger generations of Vietnamese and Russians will preserve mutual good feelings and close friendship between the people of the two countries," Sang told TASS ahead of his trip to Moscow to attend Russia's 70th anniversary commemoration of the Allied victory in World War Two. The president stressed that Vietnam's youth treasured memories of conquests generations before them had made and recognised their contribution to defence of the homeland. "The younger generation of modern Vietnam is being brought up on the basis of fine traditions established by their grandfathers and fathers, the history of their country and traditionally close ties between the people of our states," Sang said. "These young people are willing to make their own contribution to our countries’ relations and continue to develop and accumulate existing traditions of solidarity, friendship and close links between the two nations," he added. "Vietnam and Russia will make every effort to pass on warm feelings of friendship to the next generations of our countries," Sang said, expressing hope that future generations "will never forget our common heroic past" and "will promote maintenance of peace and stability, cooperation and development in the region and the whole world". Sang is due to visit Moscow on May 7-11 to take part in commemoration events marking 70 years since the Soviet and Allied armies defeated Nazi Germany in 1945. Read more
