Violence in Egypt has no serious impacts on Thai tourism

BANGKOK, August 20 (TNA) - Tourism and Sports Minister Somsak Phurisisak says that ongoing political violence in Egypt has no serious impacts on the Thai tourism. Somsak told reporters on Tuesday that the situation in Egypt has limited impacts on Thailand's domestic tourism. According to the minister, the number of visitors from the Middle East has slightly dropped, but more travelers from new Muslim countries of the former Soviet Union, like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, are cancelling their trips to the Middle East and visiting Thailand instead. The minister acknowledged that the number of visitors from the former Soviet Union bloc has risen from about 30,000 to about 40,000, and that the Kazakh Ambassador to Thailand met and informed him that most Kazakh travelers have refrained from visiting the Middle East, Egypt and nearby countries and have, instead, visited Thailand. The minister also noted that the political situation in Thailand has also had no impacts on domestic tourism, as the number of foreign tourists did not drop during recent political demonstrations and the imposition of the Internal Security Act (ISA), and that about 80,000-85,000 international tourists visit Thailand daily.
