Waste management at Sanam Luang

BANGKOK, November 11 (TNA) - As Sanam Luang ceremonial ground has catered for tens of thousands of people travelling from across the country to pay their respects to late His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej at nearby Grand Palace, leftover food at Sanam Luang has been used to feed pigs, partly of the total amount of garbage amounting around 78 tonnes on average each day since October 14. Suwanna Jungrungrueng, Director of the Department of Environment of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), told journalists of BMA's garbage management plan on Friday, saying that garbage on weekdays has increased by 27 per cent and it is almost equal to that collected on weekends, when the number of people has been normally much higher than on weekdays. "BMA has recruits 15,039 volunteers to sort garbage at 10 spots around Sanam Luang. The amount of leftover food has been about 50 per cent of all wastes; so it has been managed by the Bangkok Noi District to feed pigs", the director revealed. According to the BMA senior official, about 25 per cent of the garbage has been plastic drinking water bottles that can be recycled to reduce the burden in waste management. (TNA)
