Water in Chiang Mai’s moat safe for Songkran celebrants

CHIANG MAI, THAILAND, April 10 (TNA) - Local authorities have affirmed that water in a main moat in the heart of Chiang Mai Province in the Thai North is safe for water play during this year's Songkran or Traditional Thai New Year Festival. Speaking to reporters after leading a team of local authorities and experts to inspect the quality of water in the main municipal moat, Thatsanai Buranupakorn, Mayor of Nakhon Chiang Mai Municipality, said Monday's inspection came after reports that water at some spots might not be safe for use during this year's Songkran Festival when celebrants take water from the moat for water splashing. The mayor explained that officials have improved the oxygen level and water quality in the moat and it is, thus, now safe for water play but not for consumption. Besides, security measures have already been put in good place for the safety of both Thai and foreign celebrants. The mayor, however, asked all parites to celebrate this year's Traditional Thai New Year properly to preserve the unique culture of the Kingdom's northern region. (TNA)
