WHO praises Thailand for successfully stop mother-to-child HIV transmission

BANGKOK, June 10 (TNA) - The Geneva-based World Health Organization (WHO) has announced and praised Thailand for being the first country in Asia capable of eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Government Spokesman Major General Sansern Kaewkamnerd told journalists at Government House on June 9 that Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha is pleased with WHO's announcement on June 8 and with the success of Thailand in turning to become a world model of effective solution to a health crisis. The spokesman said that the prime minister thanked Thai authorities concerned and people to be part of the success. According to the spokesman, Thailand is the second country in the world, along with Cuba, that have successfully stopped the mother-to-child HIV transmission. The spokesman reported that in 2000, there were 1,000 HIV-infected newborns but the number plunged to 85 in 2015, as local health officials have conducted blood tests for HIV for all pregnant women who sought medical care at hospitals and HIV-infected ones have received antiviral drugs free of charge immediately. Despite the appreciation from WHO and the international community, the spokesman acknowledged, the key is for the Thai government and people to help maintain the success. (TNA)
