Wild elephants invade orchards

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN, Jan 27 (TNA) - Authorities today inspected damages on fruit plantations in Prachuap Khiri Khan province after about seven wild elephants in the Kui Buri National Park encroached on farmland and ate the fruits last night. A village chief said wild elephants come to search for food every night at plantations, where local farmers grow banana, papaya, pineapple, para rubber and oil palm. Village volunteers ask for assistance from government combined forces to chase the wild elephants by lighting fire crackers and burning tires. But the attempt is not fruitful, he said, adding that officials are now planning to build food sources in deep forest for the wild elephants to prevent them from roaming into the plantation and water wells built by the villagers.
