Workshop to highlight sustainable development for coastal areas

Manama, Apr. 21 (BNA): The Bahrain Society of Engineers (BSE) will organise a workshop on "Sustainable Development for Coastal Areas in the Arabian Gulf Region" together with an accompanying specialized Expo, on Monday at the BSE headquarter in Juffair. The event will be held under the auspices of the Minister of Works and Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning, Essam bin Abdullah Khalaf. "The costal cities and communities are facing many challenges of development to the sustainable urbanization level, and to be able to promote the level of services and also the speed of efficiency and achievement," BSE Chairman Masoud Ibrahim Al Harmi said. "This requires modern expertise, capabilities, techniques and sound future planning, which requires concerted efforts and synergy between the brotherly countries for the purpose of increasing co-operation, co-ordination and exchange of expertise and experience, reflecting a commitment to ensure adequacy of local and national development strategy to the good urban governance and development goals". "Pursuant to the Ministerial Meeting recommendation No. (81) to the Ministers of Municipalities in the GCC countries, the Ministry of Works , Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning in co-operation with BSE will organize this specialized one day-workshop in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The workshop organizers concentrated their efforts to attract trainers with expertise and competence in the field of sustainable development and the development of coastal areas." The workshop, to be attended by regional and international experts and specialists, will be for one day only from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and will be divided into three sections. The first section will be presented by Prof. Dr. Costa Mani, Director of Global Urban Studies Institute of the International Academy in Berlin, under the title "Global Determinants and Opportunities for Development of Coastal Areas in the Gulf Region". The second section will be presented by Nayef Omer Al-Kalali, the Former Undersecretary of the Ministry of Works, and the Regional Expert in Coastal Engineering and Planning, entitled "Coastal Development Projects in the Arab Gulf States- Best practices and the Major Lessons Learned". The third section of the workshop will be presented by Dr. Gareth Doherty, Lecturer in Green Spaces Engineering, Harvard University Graduates School of Design-USA, entitled "Environmental Urbanism: Cases & Case Studies on Sustainable Development for Coastal Areas". The workshop aims to review the practice of sustainability and sustainable urban development principles, review some case studies on coastal development projects, discuss the potential impacts of climate change in the Arabian Gulf region and the resulting challenges, application of principles of sustainable development in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the GCC counties through a series of scenarios that have been developed among the interested working groups. The workshop aims to attract architects, urban planners, directors of cities, beautification and landscaping engineers, civil engineers and all those interested in the environmental building.
