World Bank Pledges US$500 Million For Nepal's Reconstruction

By Yuba Nath Lamsal KATHMANDU, June 24 (Bernama) -- The World Bank has pledged US$500 million in assistance to Nepal for the reconstruction of structures damaged by the April 25 earthquake and its powerful aftershocks. It would provide up to $500 million to finance the reconstruction of Nepal’s post-earthquake reconstruction, said a statement of the Nepal country office of the World Bank Tuesday. "We are working with the government of Nepal and its international partners to help the country get the resources it needs to build back better...and we will do everything possible to help people who suffered from the earthquake, especially the poor, rebuild their homes and livelihoods," the statement quoted World Bank president Jim Yong Kim as saying. An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale hit Nepal on April 25, killing at least 8,700 people. Nepal is hosting a donors’ conference on June 25 to raise funds for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of earthquake destroyed structures. Delegates from 41 countries and agencies including the United Nations, World Bank and Asian Development Bank are participating. -- BERNAMA
