Yonhap, unification ministry to hold symposium on lasting peace for Korean Peninsula

SEOUL, June 18 (Yonhap) -- Yonhap News Agency and the Ministry of Unification will co-host an annual forum in Seoul later this month to discuss ongoing efforts to denuclearize North Korea and foster a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. Under the main theme, "Push open the door of peace, move beyond denuclearization and strive for co-prosperity," the symposium is set to take place at Lotte Hotel in downtown Seoul on June 29. The forum comes amid growing hope for peace on the peninsula in the wake of two summits between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un in April and May, and last week's historic encounter between U.S. President Donald Trump and Kim. At the conference, Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon will deliver a keynote speech, while former Unification Minister Lim Dong-won will give a lecture on the proposed declaration of a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War and a peace regime on the peninsula. Discussions and presentations will be divided into two comprehensive sessions. The first session will deals with the 65-year-old armistice regime, denuclearization and a peace regime, while the other will touch on a new economic roadmap for the peninsula and related issues. Former Unification Minister Lee Jong-seok will moderate the first session. Kim Yeon-chul, head of the Korea Institute for National Unification (KINU), and Paik Hak-soon, chief of the Sejong Institute, will give presentations, while Kim Joon-hyung, professor at Handong Global University, and Kim Yong-hyun, professor at Dongguk University, will join a panel discussion. The second session will be moderated by former Vice Unification Minister Lee Kwan-se. KINU senior research fellow Lim Kang-taek and Ahn Byung-min, a researcher at the Korea Transport Institute, will give presentations, while several economic experts, including Jeong Bong-ho of the Federation of Korean Industries, will join a debate during the session.
