Iran’s radioactive drugs to ‘revolutionize early cancer diagnosis’

Tehran, IRNA - A senior researcher with the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) has hailed the country’s self-sufficiency in the field of nuclear industry, saying the overflow of nuclear technology into the medical sector has led to significant progress in the use of radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic purposes.

Ali Samani, deputy director of the AEOI’s Technology Research Institute, said on a national TV program on Monday that significant research projects have been undertaken over the past couple of years, particularly in the field of radiopharmaceuticals.

“Currently, clinical studies are underway, and these radiopharmaceuticals will soon be included in the country's drug list, playing a crucial role in early cancer detection and providing substantial assistance to nuclear physicians,” he noted.

Radiopharmaceuticals are radioactive drugs that can be used for diagnostic, and increasingly, for therapeutic purposes in the medical sector.

Samani added that while the achievements in nuclear medicine may not be widely known by the public, they should be recognized as valuable contributions.

“The integration of nuclear technology in healthcare has the potential to revolutionize early cancer diagnosis and support nuclear physicians in their vital work,” the researcher stated.

Samani also touched upon a recent meeting between AEOI staff and the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei which came early on Sunday after the Supreme Leader toured an exhibition of Iran’s nuclear achievements.

He emphasized the premium placed by the Supreme Leader on the application of nuclear technology in various sectors such as healthcare, the environment, water desalination, etc., with the aim of providing the general public with more benefits from Iran's home-grown nuclear industry.
