Iran, Saudi Arabia agree to resume hosting bilateral football matches

Tehran, IRNA – The Iranian and Saudi Arabian football federations have reached an agreement to resume hosting each other’s teams as part of bilateral games after years of organizing those matches in other countries.

This decision was made during a meeting in Sydney, Australia, on Monday between Mehdi Taj, the president of the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and his Saudi Arabian counterpart, Yasser Al Misehal. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In light of this new agreement between Tehran and Riyadh, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Disciplinary Committee will stop holding matches between teams from Iran and Saudi Arabia in a third country.

The AFC will officially inform others about this decision through a statement in the near future, said a report by the IRNA.

The report said as a first step towards building closer ties between Iranian and Saudi Arabian football federations, a Saudi referee will officiate the upcoming friendly match between Iran and Angola.
