Iranian researchers discover new cyanobacteria in Persian Gulf island

Tehran, IRNA – Researchers from the microorganisms bank of the Iranian Biological Resource Center (IBRC) have discovered of a new genus of cyanobacteria in an area near the Iranian island of Kharg in the Persian Gulf. simple trichal

A researcher from the Czech Republic contributed to the discovery of Khargia Iranica, a project carried out by the IBRC in cooperation with the University of Tehran and Alzahra University, according to a Monday report by the IRNA.

The findings suggest that the diversity of cyanobacteria on Kharg, an island that hosts Iran's main oil export terminals, is greater than previously thought.

Trichal cyanobacteria are a group of cyanobacteria that have a simple, filamentous structure. They are classified within the order Synechococcales, which contains both coccoid and simple trichal taxa. They can occasionally be present in biofilms.
