Bernama Grows Stronger, Celebrates 47th Anniversary

KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), which began operations in May 1968, Thursday celebrated its 47th anniversary. Beginning with the text news service and operating from a rented bungalow at number 222, Jalan Pekeliling, here, Bernama continued to grow stronger after going through various challenges and changes to suit the changing time and in line with modern technology. Bernama chairman Abdul Rahman Sulaiman said the organisation must be smart in facing the scenario in delivering information, which was now dominated by the social media, in order to remain relevant as a credible news agency. He said the current trend and aspiration of the readers no longer focused on the print media as news dissemination now was speedier and more extensive through the social media such as Facebook and Twitter. "As such, Bernama must always advance in providing its service in line with the current needs," he said in his speech at the agency's 47th anniversary celebration, here. At the event, 43 Bernama staff received various appreciations such as the Excellent Service Award, Long Service Award, besides the prizes for various contests such as the Best Innovation Contest, Essay Writing Competition with the theme 'Bernama di Hatiku' and the Hunt@Bernama. Meanwhile, Bernama general manager Zulkefli Salleh said the organisation was fortunate to be served by a team of highly determined staff in taking the news agency to where it was now. "An important asset that must be looked after well by any organisation is its staff who are loyal, bold and confident in carrying out their duty," he said. He said although the nation was now facing various scenarios including the political situation which was aggravated by various issues, Zulkefli hoped all staff would maintain their credibility and professionalism in disseminating accurate news and information to the community. Also present were Bernama editor-in-chief Zakaria Abdul Wahab, senior management staff and other employees of the news organisastion. Bernama, which is now operating from Wisma Bernama, Jalan Tun Razak, here, provides a source of the latest news and can be trusted by the local and foreign media organisations, government agencies, the private sector, universities and individuals in the country. Bernama also has bureau offices throughout the country and representatives in the region such as in Singapore, Jakarta, Bangkok, Beijing and New Delhi. Bernama had also widened its news dissemination through an audio-visual unit in September 1998 which provided news services in the form of audio-visuals before being known as 'Bernama TV' on Feb 28, 2008 and now broadcasting on Astro channel 502. Bernama also owns the first Malaysian radio news station, Bernama Radio24 launched on Sept 3, 2007 through the FM 93.9 MHz microwave. -- BERNAMA
