Film of Kyrgyz director nominated for Oscar

Bishkek, Sept. 27, 2021 . / Kabar / . The Oscar Committee of Kyrgyzstan at its meeting on Sept. 18 decided to nominate the Shambala film directed by Artykpai Suyundukov for Oscar award of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the press service of the Oscar Committee of Kyrgyzstan said. The movie will be presented in the category Best International Feature Film / International feature film. The film is based on Chingiz Aitmatov’s story "The White Ship" about a seven-year-old boy and six adults living in a protected forest. The boy is lonely. The parents are replaced by grandmother and grandfather, who tells folk tales to his grandson. The world of folks and beautiful legends, perceived by an impressionable child inclined to a fabulous perception of reality, comes into conflict with the harsh reality of the world of adults, busy with their own problems. The film had its world premiere at the Shanghai International Film Festival in 2020. On April 25 this year, the work of the Kyrgyzstani director won the Nika 2020 award for best film in the Baltic States, Georgia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Committees of foreign countries are now selecting contenders for the long list of awards, and after a special jury of the film academy will determine the short list. The 94th Academy Awards for Excellence in Cinematography for 2021 will be held March 27, 2022 at the Dolby Theater (Hollywood, Los Angeles).
