IIUM Graduates Able To Secure Jobs Easily - President

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) graduates were not only successful in securing jobs easily, but were also the choice of employers, said its president, Dr Rais Yatim. He said a study conducted by the university on the marketability of graduates last year found that 75 per cent of the overall IIUM students were employed six months after graduation. "IIUM has a good track record, especially in the fields of engineering, science, medicine, dentistry and law. We will ensure that our graduates meet the needs of the market, not merely obtain certificates and degrees only," he said. He was speaking to reporters after attending the 30th IIUM Convocation here Sunday. The university has so far, produced 70,273 graduates in various fields. Rais, who is also Government Adviser on Social and Cultural Affairs, said IIUM would establish a 'Speakers Corner' at the Faculty of Law in January next year, to encourage IIUM staff and students to air their views on various issues. In another development, Rais, who was formerly information, communication and culture minister, said local television stations needed to ensure that there was space in the struggle to uphold the national language. He was commenting on a proposal for Bernama TV to fully offer English language news by next year, with the advent of digital broadcasting in 2017. "Each ministry is responsible for the development of Bahasa Melayu and if the conversion to news in English is made, it will boost marketing and yield better revenue," he said. Currently, Bernama TV offers news and programmes in multiple languages, namely Bahasa Melayu, English, Mandarin and Tamil. The three-day convocation which began Saturday, will see more than 400 graduates in various disciplines receiving their degrees. Sunday, the convocation also saw the handing over of Bachelor of Engineering (Manufacturing) to Fatimah Ali, 57, who received it on behalf of her son, Mohd Hakim Mohd Saleh, who was killed in a road accident last month. -- BERNAMA
