Japanese Raccoon Dogs on Show at Chiang Mai Zoo, Northern Thailand

CHIANG Mai, July 27 (TNA) - A group of six Tanuki or Japanese raccoon dogs, considered rare and almost extinct, have found a new home at Chiang Mai Zoo in the north of Thailand and were on display to the Thais and foreigners for the first time on Sunday. One male and five female Tanuki, which have original birth in Siberia are brought to the zoo to allow visitors admiring their cuteness. They were taken from a private-run zoo in Europe. Thanarut Wadisirisak, a former committee member of the Zoological Park Organisation who brought the six Tanuki for the zoo, said that this group of Japanese Raccoon Dogs is considered the largest group in South Asia. He said that the animal is now almost extinct and he wanted to increase its population, if possible. (TNA)
