Mexico to use Russia’s Sputnik V to vaccinate seniors

MEXICO CITY, February 19. /TASS/. Russia’s Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine will be used in Mexico to inoculate seniors, Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell told a press conference Thursday. "It will be used for those from the senior age group," he noted. According to the deputy minister, the vaccination with the Russian jab will be launched in a disadvantaged city municipality where high COVID-19 mortality was observed. Earlier, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that the first shipment of Sputnik V is expected to arrive at the weekend. According to approximate estimates of the authorities, Mexico has had around 2.21 million COVID-19 infections since late February 2020 and more than 178,100 coronavirus-related deaths. Meanwhile, 1.57 million patients recovered from the disease. Currently, the country has used more than 1.3 million doses of the vaccines produced by Pfizer and AstraZeneca to protect health workers and seniors. Almost 250,000 people have received both doses.
