Organ Donor Rate In Malaysia Only 0.69 Per Cent For 1 Million

KUALA TERENGGANU (Terengganu, Malaysia), April 24 (Bernama) -- The level of awareness among Malaysians on the importance of organ donation to save lives isstill too low at 0.69 for the 1,000,000 people compared to other developed countries. Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital Anesthesiology and intensive care chief department Dr Aisai Abdul Rahman said Singapore has recorded a higher rate of five per cent per 1,000,000 of its people. "Therefore, awareness programmes need to be improved for the people of Malaysia and so far the most in need of transplants group is Muslims but the highest donors come from non-Muslims. "Basically there are many who refuse to donate organs because of confusion over a few things, especially concerning religious matters," he told reporters after attending organ transplant forum here Thursday. --BERNAMA
