Over 30,000 cyclists taking part in Moscow cycle parade

MOSCOW, May 29. /TASS/. More than 30,000 people from all around Russia took part in Russia’s largest cycling parade in Moscow on Sunday, the press service of Moscow’s department of transport told TASS. "The biggest ever event was held all across Russia - cycling parades were held in St. Petersburg, Petrozavodsk, Irkutsk, Khabarovsk , Volgograd - in 30 Russian cities. From this year on, the cycling parade will be a nationwide event," the press service said. The event was organized by Moscow’s department of transport and the Let’s Bike It! project in support of the development of the city cycle infrastructure, it is intended to improve road safety. Anyone over 14 years of age could join the bicycle parade. The parade participants who had no bikes of their own could a bike in the city’s cycle rental system at a discount. In addition, residents of suburbs on this day were allowed to transport their bikes free of charge in commuter trains. "Our parade today is to become a major event for the cycling movement not only in the capital city but across the country too. Today, traffic was stopped along the entire Garden Ring [a circular motor road in central Moscow]. We have covered a distance of 16 kilometers along it together with you. I am sure Muscovites liked this event and bicycle will become a still more popular means of transportation in Moscow," the press service cited Maxim Liksutov, a deputy Mayor of Moscow, as saying after the parade. An entertainment program was offered to the cycling parade participants will have. The event’s sponsors and partners handed out gifts, arranged free bike wash, organized competitions and games.
