Philanthropist establishes Institute of Russian Culture and History within American University

WASHINGTON, March 23. /TASS/. The American University (AU) announced on Monday that renowned philanthropist Susan Carmel Lehrman has established the Carmel Institute of Russian Culture and History within the AU College of Art and Sciences. The first event of the newly set up institute will be a symposium devoted to the 70th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany. The meeting on April 11 is entitled "The Strength of Cooperation: Lessons from the Grand Alliance, 1941-1945". Announcing the new institute, Susan Carmel Lehrman said she was glad that programs of educational and cultural exchanges with Russian universities on the basis of American University would now be held on a permanent basis. "With the further endowment of the Institute, our educational outreach will widen. This is important because I believe that there is no better way to get to know people than to live among them and listen to their opinions about themselves, about the world, and about one's own country," the international philanthropist and businesswoman said.
