Russia’s famous Tretyakov Gallery opens its Romantic Russia exhibition in Tokyo

TOKYO, November 22. /TASS/. Dozens of paintings from the collection of Russia’s world-famous Tretyakov Gallery will be showcased in Tokyo during the ‘Romantic Russia’ exhibition which opened at the Bunkamura culture center on Thursday. "We all know that Russian music and literature are popular in Japan. However, Russian paintings are not that well-known. This exhibition is intended to complete the image of Russia, created by Russian composers and Russian writers," Tretyakov Gallery Director Zelfira Tregubova said. The exhibition features works from the museum’s main collection, created by Russian painters between the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century, including Ivan Kramskoi’s ‘An Unknown Lady’ (1883) and Moonlit Night (1880) and Ivan Shishkin’s ‘Noon. Neighborhoods of Moscow’ (1869) and ‘Rain in an Oak Forest’ (1891). According to Tregulova, the paintings were selected to reflect the deep and complicated idea of world and nature that Russian people have, as well as profound lyrical feelings and ideas that permeate the Russian art. Following a meeting in April 2017, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced that Russia and Japan would hold a year of bilateral cultural exchange in 2018.
