Russia, China to organise expedition to find bodies of Soviet military in China

BEIJING, February 13. /TASS/. Russia and China will organise a joint search and reburial of Soviet military who died for liberation of the Chinese north-eastern regions from Japanese invaders, head of the Historic Memory project Sergei Orlov told a news conference on Friday, saying it would be the first expedition of the kind in the modern history of Russia and China. The search will be one of the actions the countries devote to the 70th anniversary of victory over German fascism and Japanese militarism. The expedition will search 32 square kilometres in the district of Mudanjiang (Heilongjiang Province), where 388 Soviet military were buried. "This work is very important for us," Charge d'Affaires of Russia in China Evgeny Tomikhin said. "These works reflect the traditional friendship between our peoples," the province’s government said. "The Soviet military made an important input in the final victory of the Chinese people over the Japanese invaders." In August-September 1945, the Soviet Union liberated China’s north-east from the Japanese. The mission took 25 days. Read more
