SIA Plane Catches Fire, But Passengers And Crew Safe

SINGAPORE, June 27 (Bernama) -- Singapore Airlines (SIA) will be cooperating fully with the authorities in their investigations on Flight SQ368, the engine of which caught fire early Monday morning. The Boeing 777-300ER operating from Singapore to Milan, returned to Singapore following an engine oil warning message, the airline posted on its Facebook Monday. SIA said the aircraft's right engine caught fire after the aircraft touched down at Changi Airport at around 6.50 am. The fire was put out by the airport emergency services and there were no injuries to the 222 passengers and 19 crew on board. "Passengers disembarked through the stairs and were transported to the terminal building by bus. Passengers will be transferred to another aircraft which is expected to depart for Milan later today (Monday)," said SIA. Quoting passengers, Channel NewsAsia said the flight turned back about two-and-a-half hours after taking off due to a fuel leak. One of them, Lee Bee Yee, who was on the flight with her husband, said there was a strong smell of fuel on the plane. "The pilot said he was going to turn back because the engine was leaking oil on the right side. The captain said they could not turn on that side of the engine or else the plane would be vibrating. And they couldn’t fly like this to Milan. That’s why they turned back," she was quoted as saying. "We were sleeping and didn't think too much about it. After the plane landed in Singapore, the passengers cheered and clapped. Then, there was a spark and there were ‘huge flames’ coming from the right side of the plane," she said. -- BERNAMA
