Skin grafting saves young girl

MASHHAD,June 25(MNA) – The doctor in charge of the burn unit of Imam Reza Hospital in Mashhad said on Sunday that a young girl’s life was spared by skin grafting. Skin grafting involves the transplantation of skin when a patch of skin that is removed by surgery from one area of the body of the patient or a donor and transplanted, or attached, to another area. The skin graft - the transplanted tissue - was taken from a teen donor, Mohammad Hassan Tavahouseh, who went brain dead after an accident. Over 65 percent of the young girl’s body was burned severely so much so that the patient no longer had sufficient skin to cover her wounds therefore the surgeons performed allogeneic graft taxonomy on the patient, Dr. Tavousi told . Allogeneic is a term used when the donor and recipient are of the same species. Mashhad University of Medical Sciences has played a pioneering role in skin grafting surgery in Iran, Dr. Tavousi said proudly. So far around 150 skin grafting operations have been successfully carried out at that location.
