Turkish doctors working in Mogadishu in Eid

Health personnel of Turkish Health Ministry are continuing to work in field hospital in Somali capital Mogadishu during Eid al-Adha religious holiday. MOGADISHU (AA)-November 7, 2011 - Orhan Canbulatel - Dr. Idris Etkar told AA that they were the third team of Health Ministry coming to work in famine-stricken Somalia, adding that they had been in Mogadishu for ten days. We felt responsible to work here even in Eid al-Adha, he said. Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son Ishmael (Isma'il) as an act of obedience to God, before God intervened to provide him with a ram to sacrifice instead. The meat is divided into three parts. The family retains one third of the share; another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors; and the other third is given to the poor and needy. We work day and night and in holiday, and we are happy to help people in here, Etkar said. Nurse Filiz Ayazlar told AA that Somali people loved Turkish people very much, adding that she was happy to be here too.
Health personnel Adem Durak also said that he had participated in search and rescue efforts for five days in Turkey's eastern Van province which was recently hit by a massive earthquake, and then he proceeded to Mogadishu to help Somali people. Van was hit by a massive earthquake measuring 7.2 on Richter scale on October 23. 601 people were killed and 4,152 others were wounded in the quake. 188 people were pulled alive out of the debris. Somalia is facing with one of the worst droughts in the past 60 years. The epicenter of the drought lies on the three-way border shared by Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia, a nomadic region where families heavily depend on the health of their livestock. Uganda and Djibouti have also been hit by the disaster. Tens of thousands of people have so far been displaced due to the humanitarian situation in the region.
