Undersea cable comes to Ly Son island

Quang Ngai, September 10 (VNA) - Ly Son Island, the central province of Quang Ngai, will be connected to the national power grid early this October, according to Nguyen Tan Loc, Deputy General Director of Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) group. Implemented at a total cost of 652.5 billion VND (31.1 million USD), the project includes 8.7km of middle voltage transmission lines in Binh Son inland district and 26.2km of 22kV undersea cables. The money for building transmission lines in Ly Son has been loaned by the German Development Bank (KFW). Some difficulties have arisen in the construction of undersea cables in the Ly Son project due to the 80 metre depths in some places and the presence of stone cliffs, Loc said, adding that EVN has worked out measures to deal with those problems. When completed, the project will provide 22,000 Ly Son islanders with electricity from the national grid. Fifteen nautical miles from land, Ly Son Island, covering 10 sq.km., is the only island district of Quang Ngai. It lies on the sea route from the north to the south of Vietnam and at the gateway of Quang Ngai’s Dung Quat Economic Zone, as well as of the central key economic region. Due to this geographical location, Ly Son holds favourable conditions to boost socio-economic development and acts as a front administrative unit ensuring Vietnam’s sea sovereignty.-VNA
