Unicef Hosts Active Talk KL, Empowering Girls Through ICT

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) Monday hosted the Active Talk KL, titled Empowering Girls through Education and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Unicef's representative to Malaysia Wivina Belmonte said, the talk was aimed at creating awareness of the importance of education and ICT among girls to ensure a better quality of life. "For years, we have known about gender gap in education, as boys still outnumber girls in schools even with more girls receiving education than ever before, globally . "As is often the case, when a girl is left out in one area, she is likely to be left out in other fields as well, and so it goes with the gender gap in the digital world," she said in her welcoming remarks here, Monday. In that sense, Unicef's Active Talk KL brings together innovators, experts and thought leaders to showcase innovations that deliver progress on major issues confronting vulnerable and marginalized children and girls around the world, she said. Meanwhile, one of the speakers, a co-founder of MyMobileUni.net, Rani Wemel said the website provided a platform for people to learn many courses from the world's leading universities, professional and business programmes, computing and ICT programmes. Rani said, people can simply access the website by using devices such as computer or smart phone, at anywhere and anytime, for free. Active Talk KL, held in Asia for the first time, is part of the 7th World Summit on Media for Children starting Monday until Wednesday. The Summit was organised by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), the World Summit on Media for Children Foundation, the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and hosted by Radio Television Malaysia (RTM). -- BERNAMA
