Vietnam committed to supporting migrant women

HANOI, April 22 (VNA) - A regional workshop seeking to promote social services for migrant women took place in Hanoi on April 21, as relocation is now commonplace domestically and globally. On the fringes of a ceremony to establish the ASEAN Women Entrepreneurs’ Network (AWEN), the event realised the regional leaders’ declaration on social welfare and development involving the rights of women and children, including migrant women who are at risk of human trafficking, abuse and exploitation. Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thanh Hoa described Vietnam as an active member of the ASEAN Committee on the implementation of the Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers. Besides the amended law on Vietnamese nationality, the country is working with foreign governments to ensure that the guest workers fully enjoy their legitimate interests, he said, adding that educational campaigns are under way to keep them away from possible risks. During the two sessions, participants considered ways to strengthen the partnership among the ASEAN Committee on Women, the AWEN, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other relevant agencies. The event was co-hosted by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affair and the UNHCR.-VNA
