Vietnam supports flood victims in Mozambique

Hanoi, January 23 (VNA) - Vietnam will send 200,000 USD in aid to flood victims in Mozambique, who are suffering from the worst flood since 1971, according to the Vietnamese Embassy in Mozambique. The aid will be channeled via Movitel, an affiliate of Vietnamese telecom giant Viettel in Mozambique, to buy food and basic commodities for 6,000 households in the most damaged province of Zambezia. Each family will receive an aid package, worth 500 meticais (15.40 USD) each, which includes maize flour, cooking oil, bean, salt and canned fish. The Movitel also provides necessary communication tools such as internet modems and SIM cards for free to residents and rescue workers operating in flood areas. The Vietnamese Embassy in Mozambique and Movitel are now actively coordinating with the Mozambique Disaster Management Centre (INGC) to distribute the aid packages to victims. According to the INGC , heavy rain and floods have affected the life of nearly 137,600 people in four Northern provinces of Zambezia, Nampula, Cabo Delgado and Tete. The province Zambezia, where Vietnamese agricultural experts are working, bore the brunt of the flood, which claimed 64 lives, destroyed 4,963 houses, 378 classrooms, six healthcare facilities and 51 bridges and caused damages for 23,893 households./.
