We will initiate resolution on preservation of mountain glaciers this year, says Kyrgyz leader

Bishkek, Sept. 22, 2021 . / Kabar / . "The centuries-old glaciers, rivers and biodiversity of Kyrgyzstan's mountain ecosystems are at risk of extinction. This year at UNESCO, we will initiate a resolution "On the Preservation of Mountain Glaciers", President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov said Wednesday in his video message at the 76th session of the UN General Assembly. The president added that a work is also continuing with international partners to implement the provisions of the resolution "Nature Knows No Borders", introduced by Kyrgyzstan and recently approved by the UN General Assembly. Zhaparov emphasized that there are already encouraging achievements. For example, thanks to joint work with habitat countries and international organizations, it has been possible to prevent the extinction of such a noble animal as the snow leopard. "Along with this, Kyrgyzstan will try to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The Kyrgyz economy is gradually "greening", more and more carbon-free energy sources will be put into operation, meaning primarily hydroelectric power plants. In order to ensure energy security, Kyrgyzstan intends to gradually implement on its territory a number of projects for the construction of hydropower plants, which are environmentally friendly sources of energy. We believe that the implementation of projects on construction of HPPs in Kyrgyzstan will meet the needs of Central Asian countries in hydropower, and thereby create favorable conditions for sustainable development of our entire region. I invite investors to mutually beneficial cooperation in the water and energy sector, including on the principles of public-private partnership, in the spirit of the Paris Agreement," said the Kyrgyz leader. He added that Kyrgyzstan counts on the special attention, support and assistance of the world community, the UN and international financial institutions in solving the problems of ecosystems of mountainous countries, especially those without access to the sea. "In this regard, we believe that the creation of a special global fund within the UN to support mountain countries in the implementation of targeted programs to achieve sustainable development, adaptation and prevention of climate change, mountain forests and biodiversity, natural disasters, support to mountain communities is overdue," President Zhaparov said.
