Abe Switches to Mention Nonnuclear Principles at A-Bomb Event

Nagasaki, Aug. 9 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe mentioned his country's long-held nonnuclear principles at a ceremony Sunday to mark the 70th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of the southwestern Japan city of Nagasaki. In a speech, Abe said he has renewed his determination to lead international efforts toward nuclear disarmament and a world without nuclear weapons while sticking to the nonnuclear principles as head of the world's only country attacked with atomic bombs. On Thursday, Abe did not refer to the principles of not possessing, not producing and not allowing the entry of nuclear weapons in his speech at a ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. This has drawn criticism from opposition parties and groups of atomic bomb survivors. At a House of Representatives Budget Committee meeting Friday, Abe said there is no change in Japan's attitude to strictly observe the three principles. He also promised to refer to the principles at the Nagasaki event. Among all of the atomic bombing anniversary events in Hiroshima and Nagasaki that Abe has attended as prime minister, Thursday's Hiroshima ceremony was the only one at which he did not refer to the nonnuclear principles.
