Afghan Foreign Ministry Spokesman Stresses Chabahar’s Importance

Tehran, Dec 30, IRNA -- Afghan Foreign Ministry Spokesman Janan Mosazai underlined the importance of Iran’s southeastern port of Chabahar in facilitating Afghanistan’s access to the Indian market. “Iran, Afghanistan and India are determined to use the potential of Chabahar Port which, he said, is located along a strategic transit route,” Mosazai told reporters in Kabul on Sunday. He said a unique economic opportunity will be created in the region after Tehran, Kabul and New Delhi sign an agreement on the development of Chabahar Port. In November, India’s state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust sent a team to Iran to accelerate work on Chabahar Port with a view to facilitate New Delhis access to Afghanistan and Central Asia. Iran’s Chabahar Port, located 72 kilometers (44 miles) west of Pakistan’s Gwadar port, holds immense strategic and economic significance for India. The port is already connected to the city of Zaranj in Afghanistan’s southwestern province of Nimrouz and can serve as India’s entry point to Afghanistan, Central Asia and beyond./end
