Ankara may allow Russian citizens visit Turkey with national identity documents

ANKARA, March 25. /TASS/. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu stated on Monday the readiness to study the opportunity of allowing Russian citizens to visit the republic with their national identity documents. "We started negotiations about providing an opportunity to Russian citizens to come to our country with their national identity documents, without passports," the Milliyet newspaper quoted Cavusoglu as saying. The Turkish foreign minister also reported that on April 8 the republic’s government headed by President Tayyip Erdogan will go to Russia to launch the cross Year of Culture and Tourism between the two states and participate in the High-Level Cooperation Council. In the 1990s-2000s, Russian citizens had a simplified entry procedure for Turkey: they could buy a visa on the border. In May 2010, during Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s visit to Ankara the Agreement on Mutual Trips of Russian and Turkish Citizens was signed, according to which Russians could enter Turkey for a 30-day term without a visa. In May 2013, Turkey prolonged the visa-free stay for Russians up to 60 days, and in April 2017 up to 90 days. Read more
