Annan Praises Iran’s Support For Resolution Of Syrian Crisis

New York, July 12, IRNA - UN and Arab League envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan said on Wednesday Iran has supported his plan for a political transition in Damascus led by Syria and that they would use their influence to try to push all parties in that direction. He made the remarks in his report to the UN Security Council on his trip to Syria as well as Iran by video conference. 'Iran is committed to supporting the six-point plan. Tehran supported the idea of political transition, which will be Syrian-led, and allow the Syrians to decide on what their future political dispensation would be,' Annan added. 'Obviously Iran will use its influence on the government and the parties in moving in that direction,' he said. “Violence in Syria is still continuous because of continuation of violence by the opposition groups; the situation in Syria is worsening because of breaking of international rules and regulations; Journalists are limited to cover the events in Syria because of severe violence in the region; members of contact group member countries are against militarization of region and expansion of conflict to the outside region and instead want a transitional stage based on people’s desire.” He called his meeting with Bashar Assad as constructive adding that armed opposition should end the violence as soon as possible and assure the international community about pursuing international initiations in this case. “International community should work to find a resolution for ending the violence in Syria and prepare the ground for the Syrian people to decide about their destiny,” he said./end
