Araqchi: Syria Disappoints Extremists By Joining Chemical Weapons Convention

Berlin, Dec 4, IRNA – Iran Foreign Ministry Deputy for International Affairs Abbas Araqchi hailed the timely and rightful decision of the Syrian officials to join the Chemical Weapons Convention noting the decision disappointed extremists. Araqchi who is in Hague to attend the 18th annual meeting of the Chemical Weapons Convention made the remarks in a meeting with the Syrian Acting Foreign Minister Faisal Mighdad. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Chemical Weapons Convention gathering. Supporting the decision and firm will of the Syrian officials, Araqchi hailed Damascus for fulfilling its commitment based on the Chemical Weapons Convention. The Syrian official too commented on the recent agreement between Iran and the 5+1 on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, describing the agreement as a big diplomatic achievement for Iran. He said Iran’s help for Syria to implement the Chemical Weapons Convention were very useful and constructive. He went on to stress that, despite all economic and security problems in Syria, Damascus is committed to its promise to annihilate its chemical weapons./end
