Assad interested in Russia’s greater presence off Syria’s shores

DAMASCUS, March 26. /TASS/. Russia’s stronger presence in the Middle East will make the region more stable, Syria’s President Bashar Assad told Russian media in an interview. "As far as Russian presence in various parts of the world, including the Eastern Mediterranean, and Syria’s port of Tartus, is concerned, it is crucial to maintaining the balance that was upset after the breakup of the Soviet Union 20 years ago," Assad said. "The stronger presence Russia has in our region, the more stable it comes, because Russia plays a very important role in enhancing stability the world over," Assad said. "In that connection I can say that we welcome the growth of Russian presence in the Eastern Mediterranean, in particular, near our shores and in our ports."
