Assad's Initiative Reflects Realities In Syria: MP

Tehran, Jan 9, IRNA – President Bashar Assad's initiative to resolve the Syrian crisis is based on the realities in the Arab state, said spokesman of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission. Hossein Naqavi-Hosseini told IRNA that the western governments are lobbying for military intervention in Syria to disrupt law and order in the country. Assad's plan aims to go ahead with democratic settlement of the current crisis and securing civilians' rights, he noted. He said that the armed opposition and terrorist groups operating in Syria enjoy logistical support of foreign powers. Syria has been the scene of unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large number of security forces, have lost their lives in terrorist operations of al-Qaeda. On December 16, Iran unveiled the details of its six-point peace plan for Syria which calls for an immediate end to violence and bloodshed and opt for democratic process to form national reconciliation government. The Iranian initiative calls for a ceasefire be brokered by the United Nations and holding free and fair election under auspices of the United Nations for Syrian Senate empowered to draft new Constitution and put the new Constitution to referendum. Iranian peace plan envisaged to hold presidential election after a plebiscite for the new Constitution./end
