Assembly Of Experts Starts Its 14th Meeting

Tehran, Sept 3, IRNA – Assembly of Experts started its 14th meeting here Tuesday morning. The meeting is convened at the former premises of the Iranian Parliament in downtown Tehran. President Hassan Rohani and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) commander Qassem Soleimani are to address the meeting. During the two-day gathering, members of the Assembly are to renew their allegiance with the aspirations of the late Founder of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Khomeini by visiting his mausoleum in southern Tehran. They will also have a meeting with Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Members of the Assembly of Experts are elected from lists of candidates by direct public vote for eight-year terms. Current laws require the assembly to meet for at least two days every six months. The current chairman of the Assembly is Mohammad-Reza Mahdavi Kani, who was elected in March 2011. Based on the Article 107 of the Iranian Constitution, the assembly is in charge of electing the Supreme Leader. In the event of his death, resignation or dismissal, the Experts shall take steps within the shortest possible time to appoint a new Leader./end
