Ayatollah urges ulama to break silence on killing of Muslims

TEHRAN,July 30(MNA) – In an open letter published on Sunday, Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi called on the ulama (religious scholars) of the Muslim world to break their silence on the killing of Muslim people around the world. “Certainly, you are aware of today’s problems facing the Muslim world and know that no time throughout the history of Islam has witnessed the ruthless killing of Muslims by other (Muslims) like today. Innocent people, children, and women in Iraq..., Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bahrain, and above all in Syria… are being killed in Ramadan, the month of mercy,” the letter said. The ayatollah particularly pointed to the killing of people in Syrian, saying “mercenaries from various countries and unfortunately from Muslim countries have been sent (there) and are committing fratricide under the banner of the Free Syrian Army.” “Why are you keeping silent? Why do you not make any remarks, protest, and call for an end to fratricide?” Elsewhere in the letter, Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi said, “The more surprising thing is that the enemies of Islam have seized the opportunity in Myanmar and are massacring Muslims and that the ulama of Islam are silent.”
