Blast Kills Two Security Officials In NW Pakistan

Islamabad, Oct 30, IRNA – A bomb explosion killed two soldiers and injured four others in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal region on Wednesday, local media reported. “Two soldiers were killed and four others were injured when an improvised explosive device planted by terrorists exploded on roadside in (a) village,” a senior security official told media. Homemade bombs are a major weapon for militants who attack government forces in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the tribal districts bordering Afghanistan. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. South Waziristan is among Pakistan’s seven tribal districts near the Afghan border which are rife with homegrown insurgents and are alleged to be strongholds of Taliban and al-Qaeda operatives. The tribal region was once the main stronghold for the Pakistani Taliban. The military launched a large offensive against militants there in 2009, but insurgents still operate in the area and periodically stage attacks./end
