Brahimi Arrives In Tehran

Tehran, Oct 15, IRNA -- The UN Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi arrived in Tehran Sunday evening to hold talks with Iranian officials on the Syrian crisis. He was welcomed by Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African affairs, Amir Hossein Abdollahiyan at Mehrabad Airport. His visit to Tehran takes place in line with Tehran’s diplomatic efforts to help solve the crisis in the Arab state. He is scheduled to discuss the latest developments in Syria with Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi during his visit in Iran, the first since he took over the mission as UN envoy. He will also talk with Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili. Prior to Tehran, Brahimi earlier toured Saudi Arabia and Turkey to discuss Syrian developments. He will also visit Baghdad after Tehran. The former UN secretary general, Kofi Annan, resigned from his position as the UN special envoy to Syria due to the obstacles created in the way of implementation of his six-article plan. Annan visited Tehran twice during his mission before resignation. Brahimi was elected to replace him in the same position./end
