BRICS leaders call for establishing broad international counter-terrorism coalition

JOHANNESBURG, July 26. /TASS/. The leaders of BRICS member states (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) have called on the global community to establish a broad international counter-terrorism coalition, says the Johannesburg Declaration adopted at the tenth BRICS summit in South Africa’s Johannesburg. "We call upon the international community to establish a genuinely broad international counter-terrorism coalition and support the UN's central coordinating role in this regard. We stress that the fight against terrorism must be conducted in accordance with international law, including the Charter of the United Nations, international refugee and humanitarian law, human rights and fundamental freedoms," the five leaders said. "We reaffirm our commitment on increasing the effectiveness of the UN counter-terrorism framework, including in the areas of cooperation and coordination among the relevant UN entities, designation of terrorists and terrorist groups and technical assistance to Members States. We call for expeditious finalization and adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) by the United Nations General Assembly," the declaration adds. "We firmly believe that those responsible for committing, organizing, or supporting terrorist acts must be held accountable," the BRICS leaders pointed out. "We call upon all nations to adopt a comprehensive approach in combating terrorism, which should include countering radicalization, recruitment, travel of Foreign Terrorist Fighters, blocking sources and channels of terrorist financing including, for instance, through organized crime by means of money-laundering, supply of weapons, drug trafficking and other criminal activities, dismantling terrorist bases, and countering misuse of the Internet by terrorist entities through misuse of the latest Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs)," the Johannesburg Declaration said.
