Broad political dialogue on Yemen under UN aegis should be resumed - Russia

MOSCOW, May 27. /TASS/. It is necessary to push for the soonest possible termination of hostilities in Yemen and resumption of a broad political dialogue under the UN aegis, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday. The statement came in connection with the upcoming talks on May 28 in Moscow between the foreign ministers of Russia and the United Arab Emirates - Sergey Lavrov and Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, that will focus on discussing the situation in the Middle East and North Africa, including Yemen. "The armed internal conflict in the Yemen Republic is a matter of deep concern for us," the ministry said. "The key task for all of us now is to push for the soonest possible termination of hostilities on Yemeni soil, resumption of broad political dialogue under the UN aegis," it said. "It is called upon to achieve national reconciliation and determination by Yemenis themselves of the ways for their state to further develop," the statement said. In this connection, Moscow wished success to the new special envoy of the UN Secretary General on Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Akhmed. "Russia, on its part, will render active support to any efforts aimed at returning peace to friendly Yemen, ensuring its territorial integrity and sovereignty," the ministry said. "We proceed from the common understanding of the necessity to solve political nd social-economic problems existing in the Middle East region exclusively by peaceful means in the framework of a broad dialogue aimed at achieving consensus, without any outside interference," it said. Confrontation between Yemeni authorities and Shiite rebels - Houthis - became more intense in August 2014. In January 2015, the military wing of Houthis, Ansar Allah, captured the country’s capital Sanaa. Under pressure from rebels, President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and the government led by Khaled Mahgouz Bahah resigned. The Yemeni president was forced to move to Aden. After Houthis entered the city on March 25, he left the country. Hadi called on Persian Gulf monarchies to interfere. On March 26, Saudi Arabia, supported by regional allies, launched an air operation against Houthis, codenamed Decisive Storm. Later it turned into another operation, Renewal of Hope. Read more
