Cambodian PM: NAM could turn challenges into opportunities

Tehran, Aug 31, IRNA – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) could transform challenges into opportunities by reinforcing ties within the organization and also with the United Nations. Addressing the 16th NAM summit here Friday morning, the prime minister said the most urgent issue before the Non-Aligned Movement today is the existence of numerous challenges at regional and international levels. He believed all these challenges could be settled only through cooperation among member states. He also stressed that the NAM member states in order to maintain security in their countries should fight terrorism by preventing trade of small arms. The Cambodian prime minister further referred to peace and development as two main areas of concentration for the movement and said the member states could attain these goals only through peaceful coexistence. He further pointed to reinforcing of NAM role, spreading peace, reducing tension in the region and elimination of nuclear arms in the entire globe as other topics of discussion during the Tehran Summit. Hun Sen also said that climate change is currently a major challenge for world countries including the NAM member states. The 16th NAM Summit opened on Thursday morning with the inaugural speech of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
