Canadian Indigenous Populations' Right Should Be Guaranteed : Iran MP

Tehran, Oct 18, IRNA – Canadian indigenous populations' right should be guaranteed and protected, Head of Iranian Parliament's National Security Commission Ala'eddin Boroujerdi said here Wednesday. Boroujerdi made the remarks during a meeting with the leader of the Canadian indigenous people, Terry Nelson. 'Impeding the way of indigenous people to have high-ranking governmental posts in Canada is a clear violation of human rights.' The senior MP noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran has always been the voice of minorities in the international community and supported their rights. The Canadian indigenous leader for his part, called Iran a peace-seeking country which has inherited a great civilization. 'Human right is a tool manipulated by world powers to pressure the independent countries and political groups, including Iran and the Canadian indigenous people; high unemployment and poverty among Canadian indigenous population is because of the UK embargos on them.' The UN strongly condemned Canada's record on children's rights recently, accusing Ottawa of systematic discrimination against aborigines and immigrants. According to reports, Canada has forced thousands of aboriginal children into ghastly boarding schools where they have been abused sexually, psychologically, and physically. The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly during its 62nd session at UN Headquarters in New York City on 13 September 2007./end
