China Urges Pragmatic, Flexible Attitudes On Iranˈs Nuclear Talks

Beijing, Sept 16, IRNA – Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations Wang Min called for adoption of a pragmatic and flexible attitude towards Iranˈs nuclear negotiations in the coming round of talks. He urged all parties involved in nuclear talks with Iran to adopt practical and flexible policies in a bid to help develop a conclusive solution to the Iranian nuclear issue. He also called on the United Nations to review the latest decision by the 1737 Committee of the Security Council on sanctions on Iran. The Security Council Committee, formed pursuant to resolution 1737 (2006), was established to undertake the tasks set out in paragraph 18 of that same resolution. The mandate of the Committee has since been to adopt certain measures, including sanctions, relating to the Islamic Republic of Iran. According to a story in "China Daily", the Chinese official further underscored the importance his country attaches to the committee but said it should carry out its mission in a practical, sustainable and balanced manner. He also stressed that sanctions imposed by the committee on Iran are just tools to get to a certain objective rather than being a criterion to assess its performance. Min expressed his belief that in the present conditions the committee as well as the Security Council should move towards working out a diplomatic solution. Referring to the "positive changes in Iran's nuclear issue this year", he stressed that the next round of talks was of vital importance for developing a conclusive solution. Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif left Tehran for New York early Tuesday morning to take part in talks with 5+1G on the sidelines of the 2014 UN General Assembly. Zarif is scheduled to have a working lunch with the EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton on Wednesday. The Iranian delegation is to hold bilateral talks with the members of the Sextet on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. Based on the schedule, the 7th round of the Iran-G5+1 delegations' comprehensive talks will begin on Thursday afternoon. Iran's 7th round of talks with the six world powers will begin on Wednesday, September 17 in New York on the sidelines of the 2014 UN General Assembly./end
