Deceased Ayatollah Kani Laid To Rest

Shahr-e Rey, Oct 23, IRNA – The body of veteran politician and senior cleric Ayatollah Mohammad-Reza Mahdavi Kani was laid to rest at the holy shrine of Shah Abdolazim in southern Tehran on Thursday. The Shah Abdolazīm is the fifth generation descendent of Imam Hassan Ibn Ali the second Shia Imam. His shrine locates in Rey district in southern Tehran. Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei led funeral prayers for burial of the late Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani at Tehran University campus. The late Ayatollah served as the chairman of the Assembly of Experts since March 8, 2011. He was hospitalized on June 4 due to heart problems. The 83-year-old cleric had been in coma since then and passed away Tuesday morning at a Tehran hospital. A large number of Iranian people from all walks of life as well as high-ranking officials, including President Hassan Rouhani, Chairman of Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani and Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani participated the funeral procession./end
