Defense Ministry: Azerbaijan supports peace in region

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 29 / Trend K. Zarbaliyeva / A meeting was held between Azerbaijani Defense Minister, Colonel-General Safar Abiyev and Chairman Joint Chief of Staff, General Khalid Shameem Wynne today. During the visit, a delegation headed by Wynne visited the tomb of Azerbaijani National Leader Heydar Aliyev in the Alley of Honor, paid tribute to his memory and placed flowers on the grave. The memory of a prominent scientist-ophthalmologist, academician Zarifa Aliyeva was also revered, the Defense Ministry told Trend today. Then, a solemn welcoming ceremony was held at the Defense Ministry. The national anthems of both countries were performed. Views on further expanding military cooperation were exchanged at the meeting. A decision was made to start working groups' activity to implement the specific proposals. During the meeting, Abiyev informed the guest about the tense political and military situation in the region, the problems created by the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The minister also discussed the tasks entrusted to the Azerbaijani Armed Forces to restore the territorial integrity of the republic.
